I’m currently creating 22 resin figures. I’m still learning as I go, but I hope to do more molding and casting in the future.
I started out with this paper clay sculpture of a StarmanDX, a character from a Super Nintendo game called Earthbound. I made it a few years ago and cast a bunch of duplicates in resin. I’m using the same original again, but I’ll be making a few alterations later for a different final product.
The first step was to put my original in a box and encase half of it in modeling clay. The clay allows me to make one side of this two part mold at a time.
It’s ready for the molding compound. I used rubbing alcohol to clean up the edges a bit. The holes are there allow both sides of the mold to fit together well.
I mixed up the silicone mold compound and poured it in. This kind takes 16-24 hours to cure. The catalyst is purple, so it’s easy to tell if it’s been thoroughly mixed.
After the silicone has set up, I flipped it over and peeled out the clay. It was pretty sticky and required more rubbing alcohol to clean it completely off the original.
I painted a thin layer of vaseline on the silicone to prevent the second side from adhering when I pour it in. The vaseline was messy and I had to clean it off the original because even the tiniest detail will be copied into the mold.
I hope that vaseline keeps it from sticking together! The second side was poured in and will sit for 24 hours before I can take a look at the finished mold. Next, I’ll make a cast in resin!

The vaseline is a very good release agent that is effective when using silicon molds. The company Freeman Mfg.& Supply Co. http://www.freemansupply.com also have a wide selection of release agents such as silicon sprays, pattern paste wax and PVA mold releases which would be a good alternative.
Hi, I’ve just discovered your blog adn art, and it’s wonderful. I have to get myself some of that lumina clay.
I wanted to know, what’s resin, and what kind of acrylic paints do you use to mix with the clay? Is there only a certain ammout you use for it?
